Paul Lutus Advertising Essay

In his article entitled Consumer Angst written in 2007, Paul Lutus claimed that â€Å"No matter how true any single advertisement is, modern advertising, taken as a whole, tells a lie — that you need the thing being advertised. † To explain his point, Paul Lutus further claims that valuable consumer goods need not be advertised because it is a necessity by itself and no promotion is needed for it to attract and obtain sales. Moreover, he explained that the quality of the product should speak for itself and there is no need to â€Å"waste company’s money asserting the obvious†. In his above-mentioned arguments, Paul Lutus obviously focuses only on one aspect of advertising which is to sell. He missed to appreciate the other function of advertising which is to inform. Advertising, as defined by Wikipedia. org, â€Å"is the form of communication whose purpose is to inform potential customers about products and services and how to obtain and use them†. The primary purpose of advertising is to create public awareness about a certain product or service that is being advertised. It aims to communicate to the intended audience that such a product or service exists. As Taflinger (1996) claims â€Å"the basic purpose of advertising is to identify and differentiate one product from another in order to persuade the consumer to buy that product in preference to another. † Advertising is usually used to create a unique image that will be identified to a product or service. The message that is being communicated usually highlights the best features of the product – its uniqueness, usability, best characteristics, etc. – that will customer’s attention to it. After providing information on the product or service features, advertising’s goal is to entice customers to try out the product. It is therefore safe to claim that the end-goal of any advertisement is to generate sales in terms of product or service. However, while it is true that every advertising campaign is aimed at generating revenue for the brand that is being advertised, it is not proper to claim that all advertisements are lies. Even premium brands such as Nike, Armani, Prada and others do advertise their products. These brands are sought after and have all proven to be of good quality. But these brands still invest on advertisement. Advertising has become an important part of today’s business. With new products sprouting like mushrooms everyday, competition has become stiff and advertising has taken a big role in allowing the product or service to compete in the market. In his article entitled â€Å"Educating the Consumer about Advertising: Some Issues† Stephen Gotlieb (1991) explains that advertising â€Å"promotes competition among producers of products and services, keeps prices low through the development of mass markets, encourages store owners to stock a variety of items, supports free expression by funding media sources, and spurs invention†. The more you are seen and understood by your customers, the bigger chance you have to stay in the mainstream. It is therefore important to get you message through, so that your product or service gets noticed. Or else, your offer will just perish. Also, with the competition getting tighter, advertisers today cannot afford to rely on false claims for their products of services. With a lot of other options available in the market, a single wrong claim will trigger the customer to try out other product. It is the role of advertising to entice customers and encourage them to try out the product. Once the customer is convinced with the advertising claim and decides to avail the product or service, it is now the role of the product to prove itself and embody what is being stated in the advertising claim. It is therefore crucial to communicate the message that best embodies the product. Once advertised, the product or service is already exposed to t he public eye and scrutiny. Unless the customer has already tried out the product or service, their perception of the product will depend on the advertisement. It will either make or break the future of the product or service depending on how you position the message about the product. Therefore, while an advertisement is typically used to create or alter the consumer’s perception of a product and induce them into buying it, it cannot be said that it is Always  a lie. For obvious reasons, advertisements only highlight the good side of the products or services. We cannot blame the advertisers to do this. While they are obviously banking on the good side of their offer, we cannot accuse them of telling us a lie. The beauty of advertising is it gives the customers the chance to evaluate the competing products or services even before purchasing it through the product claims.

My Evolution As A Teacher In Training Education Essay

IntroductionAs a pupil of Singapore public instruction for over 10 old ages, there are certain perceptual experiences and values about learning that is ingrained in me. Short instruction experiences during my occupation in pupil attention Centre and practicum besides help to determine my personal teaching method. However, throughout this class of Teaching and Managing Learners at the Primary Level, it opens my eyes to some mistake lines in some of my beliefs and helps to rectify them with relevant theories. Besides that, it besides reaffirms some of my beliefs and provided accomplishments that farther authorise me. In this essay, I will speak two most outstanding takeouts which are pupils with particular demands and differentiated scholars. My Development as a instructor in preparationStudents with particular demands ( SSN )Past positionI have non experienced holding a SSN in my category throughout my academic life. As a consequence, I have no chance to interact with them and informat ion about them was limited. The lone clip that I get to interact with them was during my occupation as a pupil attention teacher where I experience two different instances of particular demands students-respectively anger-management and autistic pupil. They were really riotous during categories and necessitate much attending from the instructors. Since the instructors are non trained in managing SSNs, the instructors felt helpless and concluded that they are job pupils. Lack of understanding from equals besides resulted in intimidation and exclusion. It leads to their behaviour deterioration, which was a barbarous rhythm. This caused me to believe whether SSNs should remain in mainstream schools. This experience gives me the feeling that SSNs should non be mainstreamed as they have particular direction jobs that regular instructors can non manage. Besides, seeing them acquiring excluded by their equals make me experience that it may be more good if they remain in particular demands schools as it seems harder for them to incorporate to the mainstream schools. As a teacher-to-be, it besides leads me to be fearful of holding SSNs in my category as I am diffident if the preparation in National Institute of Education ( NIE ) will adequately fix me to confront the possible challenges or I will experience as helpless.Present positionMy position changed when during the class, we had a treatment on whether pupils of particular demands should be included in the mainstream instruction. That is when I realize that pupils of particular demands deserve the right to be mainstreamed and excel in a normal instruction. How can we be align to the Singapore ‘s Vision of being an inclusive state that embraces diverseness if there is segregation? ( Yeo,2012 ) There is a diverse scope of particular demands and most are no different from normal pupils except that they require more support from the instructors and more clip to go independent. Having them in the mainstream school room non merely will fit them with the much-required societal accomplishments when they enter the work force, it besides allows other pupils to interact with them and further regard for differences. As surveies have shown, there are several noteworthy benefits to pupils with particular demands who attend mainstream instruction such as high academic accomplishment, higher self-pride and better societal accomplishments ( National Research Center on Learning Disabilities, 2007 ) .It challenges my perceptual experience because more frequently than non, there are more common between pupils with or without particular demands than difference.Deductions on teaching methodThe following inquiry will be my major concern – what are the schoolroom direction schemes that I can follow to back up the SSNs inside my schoolroom? During the class, we were introduced to inclusive instruction which I find extremely applicable. There are two chief countries in this scheme -social and academic incl usion. Social inclusion is societal relationships are built within the schoolroom such that each pupil will experience a sense of belonging. Academic inclusion is about the different acquisition demands of the pupils are taken into consideration, differentiated direction schemes are being adopted to provide to the assorted disablements. Some inclusion schemes that I may follow are peer-mediated direction and intercessions, or concerted acquisition so as to further positive connexions between the pupils. ( Maning & A ; Butcher, 2013 ) . Previously, I was excessively focused on how to incorporate SSNs into the mainstream schoolrooms. Integration posits that SSNs should accommodate to the school and that lone instructors who are well-trained in Particular Needs Education can pull off them good. However, inclusion is based in welcoming diverseness and advocates that schools need to hold the flexibleness to alter its course of study to provide to diverse demands of pupils. It besides recognizes that regular instructors like me play an of import function to back up SSNs in their acquisition. Alternatively of sing SSNs needs as being ‘deficit-driven ‘ , we should follow the position that academic public presentation and schoolroom behaviour can be improved. This makes me recognize that learning and inclusion of SSNs in a mainstream school environment is non â€Å" specialized † as I thought. This reforms my personal teaching method as I learn to acknowledge that all pupils are active scholars regardless if they have particular demands. As a instructor, I will foremost necessitate to be a function theoretical account and have the right perceptual experiences as pupils are likely to mirror my actions. By handling all pupils with regard and without prejudice, I will so be able to construct an inclusive and respectful schoolroom environment that benefits all pupils. Of class, attempts to include SSNs can be disputing and I might necessitate to seek the aid of external support. However, I no longer concentrate on the challenges of holding SSNs in the schoolroom. Alternatively, my personal teaching method is now based on the impression of holding an inclusive schoolroom where it is a caring community and each person is an active scholar. There are great challenges but surely greater wagess.2 ) Differentiated LearnersPast perceptual experienceThrough my academic old ages, most of my instructors used direct direction and their instruction manners are similar. Hence, I thought that there is merely a one manner attack of learning constructs. After all, I have done good under such mono-dimensional instruction manner. For my equals who could non get by with their surveies, I merely think that they are either non hardworking plenty or merely non that smart. I so had some learning experience in private tuitions where I have had 6 Mathematics pupils at one point of clip. There was no fluctuation in the manner I taught the different pupils and I realize that the manner I teach reflects the manner I was taught. When their consequences are released, all pupils improved enormously except for one. This surprised me as he was really industrious and some of my tutees who did non work every bit difficult improved much more than him. Due to the overall success by other pupils, I ne'er one time consider that it might be due to him being non suited to my instruction manner and thought that possibly he is excessively nervous during the tests. After I went over to NIE and started my preparation as a instructor, I was being introduced to different instruction schemes, nevertheless, deep inside my bosom, I felt that â€Å" new † learning schemes such as differentiated prep are a waste of clip and I still prefer utilizing the traditional method of instruction.Present PositionDuring this semester, prior to this class, I have taken another facu lty called Multicultural surveies where I learnt that in a diverse schoolroom, each pupil has single complex individualities and different worlds. As a instructor, we tend to enforce our worlds upon our pupils and the desperate consequence is that our pupils are essentialized ( Ismail, 2012 ) . This leads to me to oppugn that possibly what I perceived as the best instruction manner may non be suited to every pupil in my category. Furthermore, during the class, I learnt about Dr Howard Gardner ‘s theory of multiple intelligences larning and the different types of acquisition manners ( Visual, Auditory, Tactile and kinestatic ) . During one of the tutorial, our coach asks the category to take part in a study that calculates our intelligence and I realize everyone have different intelligences. Reflecting that back to our educational system, I realize the traditional instruction scheme promotes on merely two sorts of intelligence: verbal/linguistic and logical/mathematics and negl ects the remainder. This is when I realize that each kid is alone in his/her ain manner, in footings of â€Å" rational profile † and types of acquisition manners. My preferable manner of larning may non be the same as some of them. I so come to a decision that there is no one-size-fits-all attack and this is true particularly in a diverse schoolroom in multicultural Singapore where kids comes from different backgrounds and civilizations.Deductions on PedogogyMy personal teaching method has been changed to acknowledging that as instructors, we need to be flexible and understand that â€Å" pull offing today ‘s diverse schoolrooms requires the cognition, accomplishments, and sensitivities to work with pupils from diverse racial, cultural, linguistic communication, and societal category backgrounds † ( Weinstein, Romana & A ; Mignana, 2011 ) . As stated by Moreno and Abercrombie ( 2010 ) , we need to understand how to â€Å" suit direction so that all kids can exe cute to their full potency † . Instruction should get down by presuming that every individual pupil are capable of larning and has a personal and alone manner of larning where I can detect and construct upon ( Grant & A ; Sleeter, 2005 ) .The debut of differentiated direction so shed some visible radiation on how I can accomplish this contributing schoolroom environment that meet the larning demands of assorted heterogenous groups of pupils. Ddifferentiated direction is an umbrella construct that incorporates the usage of assorted learning schemes ( Allan, n.d. ) and where lessons are planned with the demands of diverse scholars in head. Some applications that I will follow are utility course of study, differentiated prep and alteration of stuffs. Substitute course of study provides alternate instructional stuffs or adapts the course of study in footings of sum of content based on different larning demands, guaranting that pupils will non experience left out when they could non maintain up with the general gait. The usage of differentiated prep allows weaker pupils to get the hang losing accomplishments, and besides extension of content to dispute the stronger pupils, providing to the different abilities of the category. Alteration of stuffs can besides back up the acquisition of pupils, particularly those with particular demands. For illustration, for pupils with ocular damage, we can hold big print stuffs, for haptic s cholars, we can do usage of concrete stuffs to convey across the abstract constructs of Mathematicss and besides we can supply simplified version of excess notes for pupils who could non maintain up with their work. It may be besides utile to first happen out the acquisition profiles, the involvements and anterior cognition of the pupils through studies or former instructors so as to better be after the direction course of study for the category. All in all, I feel that as present pedagogues, we must avoid presuming homogeneousness of our pupils ‘ abilities ( Grant & A ; Sleeter, 2005 ) . With the addition of immigrants in Singapore and more volatile planetary traffic, the diverseness is reflected within our schoolrooms and therefore, as we assumed the function of a instructor, we need to make a schoolroom environment that maximizes larning for each pupil. It is a complicated yet indispensable procedure to be aware of the assorted demands of the category as a whole, runing from different intelligence, larning manners to different particular demands, guaranting every pupil ‘s possible is nurtured and maximized.DecisionThroughout the class, I learnt that in order to be an effectual instructor, it requires us to hold a comprehensive apprehension of why and what are we making in our schoolrooms. In the past, I was excessively focused on myself where I worry about what are the challenges I may confront and what is the learning manner that is most convenient to me. However, I realized that as we assume the function of a instructor, we need to maneuver from being me-centered to student-centered. We need to be aware of what are the educational purpose we have for our pupils and acknowledging their acquisition demands. All in all, I felt that this class has been challenging and helps me turn professionally. It reminds me of the demand to constantly reflect upon our personal teaching method and guarantee that it is up-to-date such that it is cognizant of current challenges and new alterations. Of class, my development of instructor will non stop here and at that place will be new find of thoughts and schemes in the hereafter. However, I believe with an unfastened bosom and willingness to larn, I will decidedly hold a well-thought out personal teaching method that equips me to be a good instructor. Wordss: 2094

Folk Dance History in the Philippines Essay

It is impossible to know when exactly dancing became a part of life in the Philippines. Many traditional dances were designed to thank the gods for natural and agricultural events, such as rain and harvests. The dances were performed during festivals and remembrances of past military victories, and still are performed at celebrations of births and weddings in modern times. Many modern folk dance festivals still feature ancient dances performed in costume of the tribal period of the Philippines. Some dances such as the Palok and the Lumagen are performed with traditional percussion instruments such as the gangsa (a small copper gong), a tobtob (brass gong) or a hibat (a gong played with a soft wooden stick). For many tribal dances there are no external musicians; the dancers generate their own accompaniment with stomping and hand clapping. Later Dances in Philippine History More recent dances done in the Philippines derive from historical events such as the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century and the conflicts with the Moors. While certain words and movements from those cultures have been integrated into the dances, the Filipino dance genre remains true to its ancient tradition and roots. * Touch: Bring your free foot to your lead foot, then touch the floor without taking a step or putting weight on the free foot. * Toe: Touch the toe of the free foot to the floor without shifting weight to the free foot. * Heel: Extend the free foot forward, then touch the back of your heel to the floor without putting weight on your heel. * Tap: Touch the floor with a sharp motion with your free foot, but do not take a step or put weight on the free foot. * Stamp: Stomp the flat of your free foot on the floor, but do not put weight on the free foot. Noise can vary based on the type of shoe you’re wearing and the type of floor. * Point: Extend the free foot forward or backward and touch your toe to the floor. The ankle should be stretched and the instep arched. Do not step or put weight on the free foot. * Press: Step forward with your free foot, putting partial weight on the ball of your foot. Your supporting leg should be straight and your pressed leg (free foot) is bent with some pressure (partial weight) on the floor. Your body should be leaned forward just a bit. * Brush: Touch the toe of your free foot to the floor, then move it a short distance toward the supporting foot or move it against the supporting foot, but do not put weight on it. * Draw: Touch the toe of your free foot to the floor far from your supporting foot, then move it toward your supporting foot without putting weight on it. * Drag: Stretch your body up, then touch your toe to the floor far from your supporting foot and move it toward your supporting foot without putting weight on it. * Flare: Sweep your free foot in an arc, making sure to keep your toe in contact with the floor without putting weight on it. The icon was discovered in the early decades of Spanish rule in what is now the town of Alitagtag, Batangas. It is the patron of many towns in the area, notably the ancient town of Bauan, Batangas. The subli consists of a long sequence of prayers in verse, songs, and dances, performed in a fixed sequence. The verse recounts the first journey of the early manunubli ( subli performer)through the fields, hills, and rivers of Batangas in search of the miraculous cross. Sections of verse are sung to a fixed punto or skeletal melody, which may be elaborated on in a different way by a different subli troupe. About five of these punto are used in a complete subli performance. These sections may be divided further into various fixed dance patterns involving one, two or eight pairs of men and women. These numbers seem to be the norm in Bauan, although other towns may have formations involving three pairs at a time. The stances, gestures, and movements of the male dancers are freewheeling and dramatic, consisting of leaping, striking the ground with kalaste (wooden bamboo clappers held in both hands), and other movements suggesting the martial arts. The women circle on half-toe, performing the talik (small refined gestures with wrists and fingers), their fingers grazing the small-brimmed hats and alampay (triangular scarf worn loosely over the shoulder)that are the essential parts of their costume. They dance and sing, to the rhythm beaten out by a stick on the tugtugan, a goblet-shaped, footed drum of langka wood with a head made of iguana skin. -E.R. Mirano

Security issues in delivering infrastructure as a service in cloud Literature review

Security issues in delivering infrastructure as a service in cloud computing and business - Literature review Example Cloud computing has emerged as a prominent computing paradigm, that promises to provide a cost and worry free solutions to consumer problems so that they can consume the services provided by the cloud without worrying about the maintenance and updating of the services they are consuming. Also it needs less investment in order to adopt a new IT infrastructure for the organization. Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) cloud specifically provides the consumers with required hardware and software resources in order to host their complete software systems and run their business applications. This ease and flexibility however, comes with inherent security threats and risks that hinder the wide adoption of cloud computing in general. This document discusses the cloud computing IaaS paradigm in detail and the security threats that can be faced by the consumers, consuming the services under IaaS cloud. Introduction Cloud computing is a quickly and extensively evolving paradigm in the world of i nformation technology and it is basically the resultant of the trend of service provision to remote users. The theme of cloud computing is that all computational resources and assets are offered by the cloud service providers to the remote users all around the globe as a service. It does not require the users to have proper knowledge and proficiency in a particular domain or technology in order to manage the resources and user can access them through the internet. Cloud computing is a fairly innovative computing model and has been prominent in the field of information technology over the past years. The cloud computing model enables the subscribers to utilize the computing resources and assets at the time of need, without investing a higher amount of money and frees them from the worries about the complication involved in adopting other options. Nevertheless the huge numbers of implementations that have gotten so much higher reputation among the community of IT are oriented towards a particular business and are commercial so it does not support the users with complex and bigger requirements and relatively little financial resources (Cunsolo et al., 2010; Cunsolo et al., 2009; Osorio et al., 2012). The trend of cloud computing is rapidly growing. Cloud computing methodology is vastly ubiquitous in this technological period. However we can define cloud computing technology as an idea or a trend. In this scenario, cloud computing is a useful technique for accessing various applications with storage capacity from a distant location via internet link. Thus it is not an advance standard approach. On the other hand, the cloud computing is an ideal solution for the management and provision of applications, information and data as a service. Additionally, these services are provided over the internet, often on a consumption-based model. In this way we can say that cloud computing  is a technological aspect that is used in main servers and internet to sustain informat ion as well as programs. Usually it is known as a  grid of computers  that are useful for serves like a service oriented structural design. Hence this design is used for delivering software along with information. Moreover cloud computing facilitates its users and business related modules to make use of applications without paying any cost. Therefore users may access their private data and information through computers, which have internet connection. Cloud computing technological aspects facilitate us through well-organized and resourceful computing with centralizing memory allocation, storage space, bandwidth and processing (Cleveland et al., 2011; TechTarget, 2007;

Human Beings are Causing Global Warming Research Paper

Human Beings are Causing Global Warming - Research Paper Example According to the research findings, it can, therefore, be said that the majority of researchers have concluded that the earth is undergoing major climatic changes. Further, they also agree that carbon dioxide levels are increasing gradually. It is an evident form of satellite images that ice caps are melting quickly, the sea levels are rising in addition to severe weather conditions such as extreme temperatures, floods, drought, etc. This has led to increased water shortages, frequent hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons. It is without a doubt that deserts will expand and the world will eventually experience food shortages and this is why human activities have to be regulated. Few scientists claim that the earth is going on well but for the case of dealing with global warming, we should advocate for the implementation of the precautionary principle which states that â€Å"†¦if any potential consequences of any action are irreversible or severe, in the absence of full scientific c ertainty the burden of proof is blamed on those who advocate taking the action†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . The earth has undergone various climatic cycles during its history. The scary part is that human beings are causing unbelievable climatic changes at an abnormal rate. The combustion of fossil fuels produces greenhouse gases at a high life-threatening rate thus resulting in global warming. Global Warming, Climate Change, Greenhouse Effect†¦. All are happening just now and this is as a consequence of human activities. After sunrays reach the earth some heat is absorbed by earth while the rest is refracted back to the atmosphere at the longer wavelength. These wavelengths are absorbed by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere before they disappear into space. The absorption of these wavelengths increases the atmosphere temperature.

Strategic Management-Case study Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Strategic Management-Case study - Research Paper Example They have been quite successful in providing a great experience to the consumers through their stores. The stores are planned at locations meant for social interaction among people between work and office. This particular strategy has helped Starbucks to attract a large number of consumers. Starbucks provided its consumers with a place where they could get together or meet people on a periodical basis when they were not working. This strategy followed with the idea of a leading brand of specialty coffee which is professed to be a reasonably priced luxury helped the company to fit in and promote the coffee culture among the consumers (Gambardella, 2009; Kachra, 1997). Starbucks has effectively recognized and projected itself to be a place apart from work and home where the consumers can indulge in some superior quality coffee and relax themselves. This image was developed by the company through proper planning of the stores and making them comfortable with the help of furniture and soothing music. Starbucks should adeptly leverage its capabilities as well as resources by offering an array of services along with the rich ambience. It should entail services like handicapped access, common spaces for the purpose of teamwork and alliance, wireless internet and also complimentary books (Gambardella, 2009; Kachra, 1997). They should also expand their menus in order to lead in the competition and to cater to the altering requirements of the consumers. Starbucks should keep bringing in fresh products. It should focus on expanding its stores at places where a high traffic is observed for the stores. Their stores need to be located at convenient places that would be easily accessible for people who are quite busy with their work schedule. Starbucks should also plan international advertising programs and venture into various distribution channels as well. Leveraging its resources and objectives through the suggested ways

Global Managerial Economics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2

Global Managerial Economics - Essay Example The increase in the economic activity becomes an opportunity for workers because of the increase in the demand of a new integrated global market as well as the dynamism of the flow of capital. When a company goes global in its business strategy, for instance, it could invest in an overseas country to take advantage of the cheap labor, hence, generating jobs for the work force in that particular locale. This is especially helpful for workers in the Third World countries which lack financial capital to support enterprise that would lead to employment opportunities. Ideally, it is hoped that the growth generated by these trade breakthroughs would close the income gap of workers in developing and industrial countries. On the other hand, the current trend in international trade becomes disadvantageous to workers when the increase in competition among enterprises causes local firms to fold-up, leaving a trail of unemployed or underpaid workers behind. The entry of multinational companies in a particular market - with the advantage of its resources - swallow small and medium sized companies in mergers or drive them out of business because it could afford to lower its products prices. We see the most adverse impact of globalization in the agriculture industry of smaller countries and those whose governments are barred to subsidize their industries. 1 Another disadvantage, which is technically not a consequence of globalization per se but the lack of state policies and regulation on this new economic phenomenon, is the bad labor standards of the multinational companies. The current international trading system follows the trade liberalization and deregulation terms dictated by the World Trade Organization. There are already several milestones achieved by the world body mainly in the lowering of tariffs as well as in the cooperation of its member-states in legislating policies in line with deregulation. However, one of the most serious challenges in achieving the

Ethics and Policies Found At British Airways Essay

Ethics and Policies Found At British Airways - Essay Example It is not only imperative that an organisation leads by example in ensuring their moral compass is well-tuned to avoid public scrutiny. One of those very types of organisations is in the most publicly scrutinized industries, the air travel business. Many principles are inducted into the air travel industry that are not just moral obligations but are actually form part of their legal obligation. By ensuring that a business follows ethical guidelines, they often employ a ethics officer to ensure that all aspects of the business code of conduct is continually adhered to as well as dealing with any issues that are relative to possible breaches of ethical conduct. Through employing this type of officer within the company, the public perception of the company itself placates a feeling of trust and if there is a situation or a problem, it will be dealt with extreme dedication to customer satisfaction and continued loyalty to that same company. There are other far reaching benefits of incorporating a business code of ethics inside the company guidelines handbook in that once a customer or client is aware of a public declaration of adhering to the standards set out by the ethics officer, but, also the company can therefore be held accountable for their actions. This allows the customer to not only know they have a method of reprisal, but, also they know that any company simply does not make public declarations without standing behind their own policies. Other benefits outlined by McNamara include: improving society maintain a moral course in turbulent times cultivating strong teamwork and productivity supports employee growth and meaning an insurance policy to help ensure policies are legal helps manage values associated with quality management strategic planning and diversity management promotion of strong public image legitimizes managerial actions and strengthens coherence and balance of the organizations' culture, and it is the right thing to do. Corporate Social Responsibility in Tourism As competition is fierce in the tourism and hospitality operations in the UK, it is even more important to ensure that ethical standards are followed and in order for an entity to be considered a highly ethical organisation, there are four principles that Pastin (1986) outlines as: 1. They are at ease interacting with diverse internal and external stakeholder groups. The ground rules of these firms make the good of these stakeholder groups part of the organisations' own good. 2. They are obsessed with fairness. Their ground rules emphasize that the other persons' interests count as much as their own. 3. Responsibility is individual rather than collective, with individuals assuming personal responsibility for actions of the organisation. These organisations' ground rules mandate that individuals are responsible to themselves. 4. They see their activities in terms of purpose. This purpose is a way of operating that members of the organisation highly value. And purpose ties the organisation to its environment. Through instilling these principles within the organisation whose main industry is air travel is

Jconstitutional law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Jconstitutional law - Essay Example The concept judicial restraint is based on the Montesque’s idea of ‘division of powers’, which upholds separation of various organs of government for effective governance. For instance, when a judge rules on any case s/he should adhere to the rule of law and must not go beyond the strict interpretation of the law; which will, in result may usurp the power of legislature. Judicial activism is a practice, wherein judges’ personal or political views get more consideration than the existing law in judicial pronouncements. Judicial activism and judicial restraint are inevitable parts of the development of judicial processes in the United States. Thus, here, it becomes necessary for us to see the concrete practices of both judicial restraint and activism in the United States. The essay intends to analyze the development of law in the United States, by critically interrogating the notions of judicial restraint and judicial activism. II. Constitutional Powers of Ju diciary in the United States Framers of American constitution have adopted the idea of separation of powers wherein three wings of the government have equal powers whereas the British model follows the idea of parliamentary supremacy, in which parliament gets more power than other branches of the government; namely, judiciary and executive. Through checks and balances, the American model seeks to prevent all the branches of the government from wielding too much power. Constitutional provisions regarding judiciary have substantially influenced the judicial pronouncements in the country. Section 1 of the Article 3 of the United States’ constitution states that the â€Å"judicial Power of the United States, shall be vested in one supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish†. Further, Section 2 of the same article elaborates the duties of the courts in the United States. The section notes that the â€Å"judicial Po wer shall extend to all Cases, in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which shall be made, under their Authority.† Above provisions in the US constitution have permitted the Supreme Court to interpret laws and the core features of the constitution. The cases that are presented before the court could well be amenable to judicial activism at the level of Supreme Court wherein the judges could reinterpret the related laws, judgments, and constitutional provisions. In 1796, the Supreme Court annulled a Virginia law on the ground that it was against the spirit of a 1783 peace treaty with Britain. Again, in 1803 Marbury v. Madison case provided an opportunity to the Supreme Court to assert its powers (Hall, 2005). The Marbury v. Madison case was one of the landmark cases in the United States’ constitutional history, which empowered the United States’ Supreme Court with the power of judicial review. The j udicial review empowers the Supreme Court to cancel or void the pronounced acts of the federal and state governments, which are against the spirit of the constitution. And, thereby, actions of both legislature and executive are brought under the purview of the Supreme Court. Judicial review, a new weapon in the hand of judiciary in the early nineteenth century, raised many questions around application of judicial rights vis-a-vis the legislative powers. What stand should be taken about judicial review? Should judges try to restrain themselves?

Food Service Company Profile and Analysis Research Paper

Food Service Company Profile and Analysis - Research Paper Example This paper highlights the history and development of the company. It also analyzes the market conditions of the company, giving its strategies. This paper briefly analyzes the menu of the company, its human resource strategies and sources of finances. It has a conclusion, which provides a critique of the organization's strategies, and business operations. In 1968, Charley Woodsby and Bill Darden came up with an idea of forming the restaurant. By then, the name of the company was Harbor for Sea Food Lovers. It was the first restaurant in Florida, Lakers, and it opened other branches in the State. This happened in the periods of 1970s, and back then, their main competitor was a restaurant by the name of Kitchen Stove. The company was successful in introducing fresh and new delicacies to their customers. These fresh dishes became popular, and this accelerated the growth of the company, and in the 1980s, the company made its presence in Canada. However, its Canadian experience was not good; this is because the company made lots of losses. The competition was stiff in Canada, and due to poor strategies and lack of sufficient market information, the company was forced to close some of its branches in Quebec, Canada. This happened in September 1997. In 1995, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and Bahama Breeze were integrated as part of the Darden Restaurants Inc. Joe Lee was then in charge as the Chief Executive Officer, and later on, he handed the company to Clarence Otis. The company is passionate about seafood, and over the years, the company has initiated the culture of innovation for the purposes of introducing and developing new menus that will satisfy the needs of its customers.   The company provides a conducive environment for dining and celebrations. It is devoted to producing high-quality services, and seafood products.

Virtues of Saint Monica and Rebekah Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Virtues of Saint Monica and Rebekah - Essay Example Saint Monica of Hippo is a Christian saint and the mother of Saint Augustine (Bohol Philippines Travel Guide). Saint Monica was a Berber descent, the indigenous people of North Africa, but she has never showed an attitude of an unschooled, undisciplined person. Instead, she grew to be virtuous despite the many temptations to be proud and rebellious (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Saint Monica’s virtues were highlighted in her marriage. Although she was brought up a Christian but her parents married her to an older pagan, Patricius, who was also occupying an official position (Pope Hugh). The character of her husband was a true test to her faith. His temper was said to be violent and he was observed to have been of dissolute habits, making Monica's married life far from being a happy one (Pope Hugh). Patricius was also written to have given to adultery while married to Monica. Patricius was written to have been annoyed with Monica’s alms deeds and habit of prayer (Bohol Philippines Travel Guide). Saint Monica also received quite an amount of hurts from her mother in-law who seemed to dislike her (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Monica was living in a society with prevalent domestic violence, but something in Monica made her different from the rest of the women and she enjoined them to follow her steps. What made Monica survive the tests of faith and why she was able to convert her husband and her children to faith in Christianity? During the difficult times that Monica was facing, she did not rebelled against God. Her situation seemed to have brought her closer to God rather than away from him. "Monica attended church daily and cultivated the virtue of patience" (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Her advice to the other advised other wives, who were beaten was to hold their tongues around their husbands, rather than proudly withstand them (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Her virtue was that of submission of obedience, as Saint Augustine, her son said that although domestic violence was prevalent that time, her mother was never beaten by his father because of her obedience (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Specifically, she was quoted saying "If you can master your tongue, not only do you run less risk of being beaten, but perhaps you may even, one day, make your husband better" (Bohol Philippines Travel Guide). These virtues and wisdom, in addition to her sweetness and patience made her exercise a veritable apostolate am ong the wives and mother in her community. Monica bore her burdens patiently that's why even though her husband was causing her pain, their life together was relatively peaceful (Women for Faith & Family). She also continued with helping other people despite the resistance from her husband. It was because she exercised the power of prayer that she was able to withstand the temptations to be in despair and to rebel against her husband. Through much prayer, she was able to convert her husband into Christianity a year before he died. It took her 30 years to pray for her husband (Bohol Philippines Travel Guide). It was such a marvellous victory for Saint Monica. More victoriously, she was also able to win her mother-in law through her gentleness, respectfulness and patience (Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.). Aside from being patient, gentle, obedient, respectful and fervent in prayer, Monica showed persistence in asking help for her son. It was written that Monica asked help from a bishop who also used Manichaean before he became a Christian for several times although she was always rejected. In the end, the bishop consoled Monica saying, "the child of those tears shall never perish" which she took as a sign from God (Women for Faith & Family). Monica's persistence was shown more dramatically when she followed her wayward and dissolute son

Monopoly essay Essay Example for Free

Monopoly essay Essay Monopoly is â€Å"a firm that can determine the market price of a good. In the extreme case, a monopoly is the only seller of a good or service. † (Miller 103) Characteristics of a Monopoly. Are that there is one single seller in the market with no competition and there are many buyers in the market. The seller controls the prices of the goods or services and is the price maker as well. The consumers do not have perfect information on the goods or services. Advantages of a Monopoly. The Monopolies avoids duplications and hence wastage of resources. Enjoys economics of scale, due to it being the only supplier of the product or service in the market, makes many profits and be used for research and development to maintain their status as a monopoly. They also use price discrimination to benefit the weaker economic section of society. To avoid competition, they can afford to invest in the latest technology and machinery. Disadvantages of a Monopoly. Monopolies have poor levels of service, there is no consumer sovereignty, the consumers are charged high prices for such low quality goods, and lack of competition could lead to low quality goods, as well as out dated goods. What is required for a monopoly to earn profits in the long run? First off, any market type can see super normal profits in the short-run. What is more important is what happens in the long-run. Pure monopolies are not the only monopoly that can make profits. Natural Monopoly or a price discriminating monopoly can make profits as well. The only difference between them is â€Å"why† they are monopolies to begin with. Oligopolies are not monopolies, although they do tend to make above normal profits. Monopolistic competition does not yield these types of profits in the long-run. Economic profit goes to zero here in the long-run because there is a lack of barriers here to prevent competition from entering (as there is with perfect competition). If a firm uses economies of scale then I would be talking about a natural monopoly (or a few firms in oligopoly depending on how large or small the minimum efficient scale is). If the MES were small, economies of scale would not be an entry barrier to competition in order to achieve positive economic profits. If the MES were large, large enough to support one firm only, that would be the definition of a natural monopoly. â€Å"In the long run, a monopolistically competitive firm adjusts plant size, or the quantity of capital, to maximize long-run profit. In addition, the entry and exit of firms into and out of a monopolistically competitive market eliminates economic profit and guarantees that each monopolistically competitive firm earns nothing more or less than a normal profit. † (http://www. amosweb. com/cgi-bin/awb_nav. pl? s=wpdc=dspk=monopolistic+competition, +long run+production+analysis). International Marketing Objectives of honey manufacturer

International Marketing Objectives of honey manufacturer Australian by Nature plans to enter the US market with its 100% pure honey by targeting the business to business market. This will be done by supplying honey to an existing and reputed honey packer through whom the product will enter the US market. This will lead to a reduction in the marketing costs at the initial stages and also minimise the risk of entering the new market. All this will help Australian By Nature to increase its demand in the market and thereby increase its production capacity. In short term the company plans to attain high brand awareness and brand knowledge. After working with existing honey packers for about 24 months, the companys brand will be well established and based upon that it can start packing the product itself and also start spending money on marketing the product. International Marketing Strategy Drivers for Australian by Natures Decision to enter United States According to Stonehouse et al. There are four main forces of internationalisation which are categorised as market, government, cost or competitive drivers. But these drivers may vary from industry to industry as well as market to market. The main drivers for Australian by Natures decision to internationalise relate to the market, government and cost drivers. As seen from the analysis in Part A above the drivers from markets basically include customer needs, marketing channels and other main countries exporting to US. But based on the above geographic analysis particularly the topography aspects which show that the bees have contracted diseases in USA will lead to a good and in future increased demand of Australian by Nature honey which is 100% pure and will be a huge success in the USA market. The United States and Australia have extended investment relations by forming the Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA). This agreement will lead to little hassles for Australian by Nature to start exporting honey to US. Going further the company will also face competition from other countries exporting honey in US, but due to its good reputation and being an Australian brand it is always at an advantage compared to its competitors. Large Companies which have high fixed costs are more likely to go global, so that these high costs can be offset by increased sales volume as result of going global; this is because higher sales volume leads to reduction in high fixed costs in turn resulting in economies of scale. This is also a driving factor for Australian by Nature because it will benefit from higher sales by internationalising. From all the drivers we can conclude that United States will be a good country for Australia by Nature to enter and become successful in long term. Foreign Market Entry Strategy As per the environmental and internal analysis done in part A we have selected United States of America as our target country. Not only it is an attractive market for all the aspects of our decision making process, but also bring in different varieties of the product in a market flooded with brands from so many countries with China being one of the main competitor. There are many methods of entry such as exporting, direct sales, franchising, internet, licensing, joint ventures and foreign direct investments. We will launch Australian by Nature honey in US through an Export Distributor. An export distributor is on who will buy the goods from the Australian producer that is Australian by Nature and will resell the product in the US at a profit. In other words the export distributor will be the sole distributor of the product in the country and will supply the goods purchased from Australian by Nature to all the retailers, supermarkets, convenience stores etc. The distributor will be handling all the customer complaints about the product in the foreign country which US in our report. The export distributor will trade under its own name and at the same time maintain an on- going relation with the exporter. Also the distributor will have sale rights in United States. The main reason for selecting direct distribution channel for entering the US market is that it will save a lot of marketing costs for the company in initial stages of the product because the export distributor will be committed to provide all the product support in the foreign country. Another advantage of this type of distribution is that the already well established distributor has existing relationships with all the supermarkets, retailers and convenience stores and based on this the company can rely on the know-how and familiarity of the market conditions to attain the best retail position. In addition to that creating a distribution network in new foreign country is a time consuming process, as well as a costly process especially where it is concerned with launching new products in the foreign markets. Possible Foreign country exit strategy As this is our first move to start operations in international market, we are prepared for a less than enthusiastic market. In case this happens we are going to do more deep market research as to the possible causes of the product failure that may be due to our marketing approach, may be the pricing, the distribution channels etc. If after further approach there is no improvement in the sales of the product in US, we are simply going to downmarket our product. Down marketing the product involves repositioning the product from high end category to a middle one, may be reducing the price of the honey. As a result of repositioning the product will cater to the middle income group also and because of which marketing costs also will be reduced because this type of consumer group doesnt demands expensive advertisements to make them believe that our product is unique from others. But there may be a further possibility that even after the repositioning the product may not be selling well; in that case we shall put off our operations completely from US by simply ending our contract with the export distributor who was the sole distributor of the product in the United States. International Marketing Program 1. Marketing Mix We will now analyse Australian by Natures marketing mix based on the following seven Ps: Product and Service, Place, Promotion, Price, People, Process and Physical Environment. 1. (A) People Providing a good quality product is important when the company is entering the foreign market. The consumers will judge the companys reputation based on the quality of the product. The exceptional expertise, knowledge and skills of the people working in the production of the Australian by Natures will be of significant importance for the success of the product in the foreign market. At the same people involved with the export of honey products will be also very important for the success of the product. The personnel working for the production of the Australian by Nature products are a source of competitive advantage. Australian by Nature must ensure that sufficient personnel have been allocated for the increased production as a result of its exports to United States. Furthermore they should be provided with up to date training so as to handle the increased production or if possible might be new machinery for production. As the more personnel will be required to cater the demands for exports, the company should invest in training them how to effectively handle the exports demands. 1. (B) Promotion As this is the first time that the company will be selling its honey products outside Australia and its initiation of entry in a broader United States market, the promotional activities are very important. This can be done by first building the awareness about the product in the market which can be done through trials and then purchases. Moreover it is also important to establish the brand personality of our product in the new market.

Effects of Yoga on Weight Loss

Effects of Yoga on Weight Loss Austina Burton Abstract For this single-system research design, the main goal was to analyze the effect a 35 day intervention of doing yoga had on weight loss in a college student. A young, single Caucasian female student participated in yoga every day, for 35 days, for 60 minutes each time. A baseline was documented over 15 days, and the intervention was documented over 35 days. Her weight was recorded every five days between seven o’clock and nine o’clock in the morning. At the end of the 35th day, the participant showed an increased weight loss of 7 pounds. The results suggest that doing yoga can have positive effects on weight loss. These results are consistent with prior studies; however those studies included other factors that could influence weight change into their research, whereas this study focused solely on yoga as the main intervention. Effects of Yoga on Weight Loss Research suggests that obesity rates in the United States have more than doubled in the past fifty years, with 32.2% of adults considered obese in 2004 (Ogden et al., 2006; Flegal et al., 2002). The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, or most commonly referred to as the CDC, has found that obesity is becoming more common, serious, and costly. Currently, more than one-third of U.S. adults are obese (Adult, 2014). That is 34.9% or 78.6 million people. Rates of overweight and obesity appear to be increasing most dramatically among young adults, the 18-to-29-year-old age group. To be more detailed, the rates went from 7.1% in 1991, to 12.1% in 1998. With those having some college education, they demonstrated even greater increases in overweight and obesity (Mokdad et al., 1999). A young Caucasian woman, currently in her sophomore year of college, would like to lose weight by doing yoga; however, she has had trouble losing weight in the past. Studies show that college students are affected greatly by obesity. This critical period, involving the young adult, contains the term â€Å"Freshman 15†, which refers to the notion that the first year of college is associated with a fifteen pound weight gain. Yoga has been positively correlated with helping people â€Å"shed pounds, or at least keep them from gaining weight† (Fred, 2005). In addition, Bruckheim (1990) found that reducing fat intake can increase weight loss; however, the participant would not like to change her eating habits at this time. Statement of the Problem In this study, the case that will be presented is a 19 year old woman, who is going to do yoga; and not change what she eats. She is 5’7† tall and weighed 150 pounds at the beginning of the study. In an interview during the baseline period of the study, the participant stated she was unhappy with her weight, which causes her to feel bad about the way she looks. The participant talked about prior attempts at losing weight, which included dieting and exercising. She also stated that, with being a full time college student, she is unable to stick to a regular schedule of exercising, and has been unable to stay on a diet. Her weight has been over 150 pounds since her 9th grade year of high school, and she has had trouble losing weight ever since. The goal of this study is to increase the participant’s weight loss by doing yoga for 60 minutes per day, for 35 days. The participant’s reason for wanting to lose weight is because she wants to look thinner, and fit b etter in her clothes. Literature Review There have been numerous research studies conducted to find out more about obesity rates in America, as well as how general exercise and dieting can affect weight loss; however, there are few studies addressing the effects yoga can have on weight loss among Caucasian women who are full time students. One study completed by Wharton, Adama and Hampl (2008) found that university students are prone to using inappropriate weight loss practices , and Lloyd-Richardson et al. (2009), found that both males and females gain weight, with similar patterns observed over the freshman year and the greatest weight changes for both sexes occurred during the first semester. When it comes to physical activity and exercise, Rocette et al. (2005) found that exercise participation was approximately 50% at the beginning and end of freshman year. Although they observed no changes in aerobic or strengthening exercises, more students reported engaging in stretching exercises at the end of freshman year; however, more than half of the students in Rocette’s (2005) sample reported eating high-fat fried or fast foods at least 3 times during the week. Its widely known that regular yoga can help reduce stress, which in turn slows the production of cortisol, the hormone responsible for belly fat. A study done by Caffrey (2013) found that yoga practitioners lost fat over an initial 6 month study period, and â€Å"kept losing it during a maintenance period with less direct supervision.† Another study, funded by the National Cancer Institute, â€Å"involved 15,500 healthy, middle-aged men and women who were asked to complete a written survey recalling their physical activity, and weight history between the ages 45 and 55† (Fred, 2005). The study measured the impact of yoga with weight change, independent of other factors such as diet or other types of physical activity. The result was that those practicing yoga, who were overweight to start with, â€Å"lost about 5 pounds during the same time period those not practicing yoga gained 14 pounds† (Fred, 2005). Methodology A single system, research design was conducted over 50 days to assess the effectiveness of yoga on weight loss for an overweight 19 year old Caucasian woman. The weight loss intervention was introduced after a 15 day baseline period. The primary objective was to determine whether yoga could decrease weight, while keeping the same eating habits over a 35 day intervention period. During the 15 day baseline period (February 1st-15th), the participant was asked to document her weight in pounds every five days by nine o’clock in the morning, using a standard weight scale. The baseline period was reported to the researcher through text messages. Following the 15 day time period, an interview was conducted over the phone, where the participant established her goal to participate in yoga for 60 minutes each day for 35 days. After the baseline period and interview were over, the researcher made phone contacts with the participant every five days to monitor the progress (February 16th-March 22nd). The researcher recorded the participant’s weight in pounds on a graph over a 50 day time period (see Figure 1). Figure 1. The intervention was implemented following the 15 day baseline period, which is marked by the dotted line. Results The goal of this research study was to analyze the effect of a 35 day weight loss intervention based on yoga. A young female college student participated in yoga seven days per week for 60 minutes each day. A baseline was documented over a 15 day time period and the intervention was documented over 35 days. The participant’s weight was recorded every five days. At the end of the 50th day, the participant showed a weight loss of seven pounds. As shown in Figure 1, the goal of decreasing the participant’s weight was met. The participant showed decreased body weight, from 150 pounds to 143 pounds. Those findings are consistent with previous studies. Discussion Single-system research designs are a research methodology that lets a practitioner track their progress with a client (Bloom, 1993). Yoga has been positively associated with weight loss in experimental and quasi-experimental designs, â€Å"which look at the effect of an intervention within, or between, groups of people† (Fred, 2005). The use of yoga as an intervention in a single system design worked due to being able to establish a realistic goal and an intervention plan. Limitations occur within most research studies. In this single system research design, there were such limitations. Weight loss is affected by numerous things, such as your environment, genetics, metabolic rate, activity level, and what you eat. This study focused solely on activity levels and did not take into account the environment, genetics, metabolic rate or what the participant was eating. An uncontrolled diet was the main limitation to this study. The participant stated that she ate out at least once a week, and mostly ate at the dining hall on her college campus, where the food did not usually meet nutritious guide lines. The effect of this can be seen in Figure 1, when a pound or less was lost between day 25 and 35. The participant’s influx of weight during the baseline period was due to her ending menstrual cycle. The participant stated it was normal for her to gain weight towards the end of it. Before this study, the participant was not getting any exercise on a reg ular basis, so when she started doing yoga 60 minutes per day, it had a profound effect on her weight. Although a form of exercise alone helped this participant lose weight, research has found that, when coupled with high activity levels, eating healthy can have an even more profound effect on weight loss (Sareen et al, 2012). For that reason, when research is done further on the effects of yoga on weight loss, I recommend having a diet plan incorporated into the design if weight loss is the main goal of the study. Gerald Graffs Hidden Intellectualism Essay -- ethos, pathos, logos, T

Co-author of â€Å"They Say/I Say† handbook, Gerald Graff, analyzes in his essay â€Å"Hidden Intellectualism† that â€Å"street smarts† can be used for more efficient learning and can be a valuable tool to train students to â€Å"get hooked on reading and writing† (Graff 204). Graff’s purpose is to portray to his audience that knowing more about cars, TV, fashion, and etc. than â€Å"academic work† is not the detriment to the learning process that colleges and schools can see it to be (198). This knowledge can be an important teaching assistant and can facilitate the grasping of new concepts and help to prepare students to expand their interests and write with better quality in the future. Graff clarifies his reasoning by indicating, â€Å"Give me the student anytime who writes a sharply argued, sociologically acute analysis of an issue in Source over the student who writes a life-less explication of Hamlet or Socrates’ Apology† (205). Graff adopts a jovial tone to lure in his readers and describe how this overlooked intelligence can spark a passion in students to become interested in formal and academic topics. He uses ethos, pathos, and logos to establish his credibility, appeal emotionally to his readers, and appeal to logic by makes claims, providing evidence, and backing his statements up with reasoning. In the first sentences of this essay, it is easy to relate to Graff’s words. Immediately, he engages readers in the topic and begins to establish his pathos. By using the phrase â€Å"Everyone knows some young person†, Graff relates to a common identity and appeals to his readers emotions. This broad generalization expands the author’s audience by automatically including all of his readers. It is Graff’s opinion that â€Å"schools and colleges might be at fau... ...ting them choose their own groups to be in during class, as offering multiple ways to complete projects, different assigned reading topics, and etc. The student can only get out of the class as much as they put in. Even though the students may wish the teachers would give less homework or let them read Sports Illustrated in class, there is a fine line between academic learning that incorporates â€Å"street smarts† and academic learning that lacks on the academic part. Teachers must insure their students are learning the required material and that they are not taking detours from learning about topics and ideas that students need to be successful after college. Clean Up Your Room! :: essays research papers

Clean Up Your Room! Short Story by: Laura Anne Gilman   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ever get woken up by your mom or robot, and they want you to clean up your room right away. Well in this novel Laura Anne Gilman makes this come true. She has been an author/editor for quite some time. In this particular book she makes the setting in a house. In this house a robot named Mum (Maternal Uplink and Monitor) controls every thing.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Clean Up Your Room! Even though it is a plain title it goes with the story. On one early morning the main character Jessy gets woken up. Usually she sleeps in forever, but not this morning. She is working on this program (MUM) to make it perfect. Made for parents to have the perfect baby sitter that they can trust. Mum can clean, cook, and make you exercise. But it always seems to have an error in it. Except this morning.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This book is an Internal Conflict. Based on important decisions Jessy has to make. As Mum keeps surprising her with all that she knows she wants to keep going along with it. To see if she has created what she hopes.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Jessy has a partner Greg that helps program Mum. In the book it talks about him creating the tone of voice the Mum uses. When Mum tells Jessy to come to breakfast she uses a deep voice. Mum also doest want her to be working at the table. In some cases if she is on the phone but supposed to be exercising, she will disconnect the phones. Jessy doesn’t like this and tells mum. â€Å" I am the programmer you are the program. You have to consult me when completing an objective.† That is an complication that moves central action.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the end of the book they are ready to put Mum on the market. Maybe it will be a great success and very useful. Both Jessy and Greg or excited and can’t wait to see the outcome.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It’s time to review this short story. In my opinion this was a good Science Fiction book. Clean Up Your Room! :: essays research papers Clean Up Your Room!

Taliban/Osama Movie

J. Galloway, T. Lockett, M. Franklin Dr. Newson-Horst Humanities 301 March 7, 2013 Taliban/Osama The Taliban are a large Sunni Islamist group of men who rule in Afghanistan. The Taliban presence in Afghanistan was densest in 1996 on through 2001. The Taliban presence/force declined in 2001 with the invasion of the U. S. military in The Middle East after the September 11 attacks. The Taliban began as a distinct group who fought alongside other mujahedeen groups during the Cold War against the Soviet Union. In the early to late 1980's the Cold War allowed the Taliban to rise to power. The Taliban group was set apart from other mujahedeen groups because of their focus on the learning and teaching of the Islamic faith alongside actual fighting. The film Osama written by Siddiq Barmak, provides an accurate depiction of the Taliban in Afghanistan by its in depth portrayal of the Taliban’s religious values, control, and acts of violence. The religious values of the Taliban are what fo rm them as a group.Anyone who wished to fight on the Taliban front would have to comply with their strict routine of prayer and study which filled their lives when they were not fighting. In the film viewers may perhaps gain this interpretation as they watched the young boys hauled off to a Taliban ran school where they prayed and studied the Qur’an in several scenes. The Taliban follow the Islamic faith very strictly sticking to traditional views and values especially towards women. The women under Taliban control cannot work, wear what they please, or come and go as they please. The religious values learned and taught by the Taliban takes a huge toll on the everyday lives of the people who are succumbed to that way of life. The Taliban has a substantial amount of control in Afghanistan with fifty-four percent of the control being permanent. Taliban ruled areas are doomed with laws and constant terror. The women are harassed and forced to wear burkas at all times. In the film a member of the Taliban warns a husband to make his wife cover her feet in fear of other men being aroused by her feet. The Taliban in Afghanistan gain finances through drug trafficking, kidnapping, and foreign donations. Private citizens from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, and some Persian Gulf nations are the largest contributors to the donations of the Taliban group in Afghanistan. The group was trademarked by controlling women to wear burkas, banning television, and jailing men whose beards were deemed too short. These controlling antics are depicted throughout the film. The violent nature of the Taliban is heavily present in the film Osama. In one scene women were protesting for the right to work to provide for their families. The Taliban blasted these women and their children with water and sprayed bullets into the crowd. Several protesting women were jailed for their participation. The Taliban also participates in kidnapping as a means of financial gain. They commit high profil e kidnappings for ransom to fund their terror. Finally, the Taliban has its own judicial system where many people have their lives taking away for random acts of resistance against Taliban law.In the film one can see an American reporter sentenced to death for recording the Taliban. The Taliban conduct live stoning to death with its members and crowd. In conclusion, the Taliban's large presence in Afghanistan has been in place for a very long time. The lifestyle of Middle Eastern women, men, and children are shaped around the ruling of the Taliban. The Taliban parade the streets and cause terror in the lives of its people. The film Osama aided with the understanding of the Taliban rule.Viewers gain a first-hand interpretation of the hardships faced under Taliban rule and how tough it is to uphold as a family. The Progressive Movement

Progressivism implies a philosophy that welcomes innovations and reforms in the political, economic, and social order. The Progressive movement, 1901 to 1917, was ultimately the triumph of conservatism rather than a victory for liberalism. In a general sense, the conservative goals of this period justified the Liberal reforms enacted by Progressive leaders. The Progressive movement, 1901 to 1917, was ultimately the triumph of conservatism †¦ Conservatist triumph was in the sense that there was an effort to maintain basic social and economic relations vital to a capitalist society. The Progressive leaders essentially wanted to perpetuate Liberal reform in order to bring upon general conservatism. Expansion of the federal government s powers, competition and economic distribution of wealth, and the social welfare of American citizens concerned the many leaders of this era.The business influence on politics was quite significant of the Progressive Era. The inevitability of federal regulation policies, reformation of social welfare, conservation, and various innovations with banking led to one conservative effort: the preservation of existing powers and economic/social relations. Adr – Alternative Dispute Resolution

ADR is an assortment of systems in which conflicts can be resolved without litigation and the courts. Types of alternative dispute resolution are arbitration, mediation, and negotiations. Without the litigation process, alternative methods provide fast and efficient results without the high cost and long litigations (Cheeseman R. Henry). Learning Team Dispute Conflicts, disputes, or disagreements among team members will be initially settle and handle through proper communication and negotiation between team members.ADR will be exclusive for those disputes and problems that can not be resolve in a timely manner and are affecting the team to achieve goals and deliver their projects. Some conflicts are necessary to bring new perspectives and different points of view among a diverse group of people. They enhance positive productivity, responsiveness, and effectiveness in achieving goals. Disagreements that are subject to an alternative dispute clause †¢ Violation of conduct code. â € ¢ Lack of participation. †¢ Minimum communication. †¢ Poor performance. †¢ Negative attitude toward the team. Late delivery of assignments that can affect the team members. Type of Alternative Dispute Resolution for Learning Team This type of ADR will be used to resolve disagreements among the learning team members during the length of this course, and will be suitable for use by any learning team in any course of the program. Mediation This method involves an attempt by the team members to resolve the dispute with the help of a neutral third party; in this case the mediator will be the instructor. The instructor’s role will be advisory, he or she may offer suggestions but the resolution will be made by the team members themselves.Mediation proceedings will be confidential and private. The team members will be in control of the outcome for the settlement of the dispute. In mediation, the third neutral party is involved to help facilitate the teams own settl ement process. They will agree to the procedures and to the individual who will assist in the dispute resolution process (LLL, 2010).Reference: Cheeseman R. NATURE OF SCIENCE Definition: Science can be defined as study â€Å"mainly concerned with the phenomenon of physical universe any or all of natural sciences or biological sciences. Or Science as the â€Å"the field of study which attempts to describe and understand the nature of the universe in whole or part. † Science is the faculty to reason out the how and why of the things as they occur in the phenomenal world or t he objective world†¦ Basically science is the study of laws of nature and man has developed science by observing. Infact this subject has completely transformed our power over nature and the world outlook. Development of the modern technology is directly the outcome of the development of modern science.Without the scientific revolution the industrial revolution would not have been possible. It has raised the human activity level by significant observations in the various fields of human existence. Whether it‘s the exploration of human health, industrial progress, agrarian developments and modern communication technologies, the benefits gained from this major subject are enormous. Infact it would not be wrong to say that we are living in the age of science and is a dominant factor in our day to day existence. 2. CONTRIBUTIONS OF MUSLIM SCIENTISTSMUHAMMAD BIN MUSA AL KHWARZIMI: Made lasting contributions in the fields of Mathematics, Astronomy, Music, Geography and History. He composed the oldest works on Arithmetic and on Algebra. The oldest Mathematic book composed by him is â€Å"Kitab ul jama wat tafriq† He is the first person who used zero and wrote†Hisab ul jabr Wal Muqabla† which is conceived to be an outstanding work on the subject which included analytical solutions of linear and quadratic equations. In the field of Astronomy he compiled his own tables which formed the basis of later astronomical pursuits in both East and West.He also contributed in the field of geographical science by writing a noteworthy book KItab ul Surat al ard. In Arabic. His book ? kitab al Tarik† is also a memorable work regarding history. AL BERUNI: Born in Afghanistan Beruni made original important contributions to science. He is conceived to be the most prominent scientists of the Islamic world who wrote around 150 books on various significant subjects concerning human existence. These subjects include Mathematics, History, Archeology, Biol ogy, Geology, Che m is try, Religion etc.He discussed the behavior of earth, moon, and planets in his book â€Å"Qanoon Almasudi† which is also considered as an outstanding astronomical encyclopedia. He also discovered seven different ways of finding the directions of north and south and discovered mathematical techniques to determine exactly the beginning of the seasons. Another notable discovery he made was that the speed of light is faster than sound . His wide range of scientific knowledge is also revealed through his books† kitab al saidana† and â€Å"kitab al jawahar† dealing with medicine and the types of gems their gravity respectively. He was a prolific writer whose works showed his versatility as a scientist. AL RAZI: The famous philosopher and a notable surgeon of the Muslim world, Zakriya Al Razi was born in Ray near modern Theran Iran. His eagerness for knowledge lead him to the study of Alchemy and Chemistry, philosophy, logic, Mathematics and Physics. He was a pioneer in many areas of medicine and treatment of health sciences in general, and in particular he worked alot in the fields of paeditrics, obsterics and ophthalmology.Al razi was the first person to introduce the use of Alcohol for medical purposes and opium for the objective of giving anesthesia to his patients. In the field of ophthalmology too Al razi gave an account of the operation for the extraction of the cataract and also the first scientist to discover the effect of the intensity of light on the eye. The modern studies confirm his understanding on the subject thus making him a great physician of all the times. ABU ALI IBN E SINA: Endowed with great powers of absorbing and retaining knowledge this Muslim scholar also made valuable contributions to he field of science. He is considered to be the founders of Medicine and also added his great efforts to the fields of Mathematics, Astronomy, Medicinial Chemistry, Philosophy, Palae ontology and Music. His most famous book is â€Å"Al Qannun† which brings out the features of human physiology and medicine. Sina is also considered as a father of the science of Geology on account of his invaluable book on mountains in which he discussed matters relating to earth's crust and gave scientific reasons for earthquakes. He is the author of 238 books which are fine instances of his thoughts regarding various subjects in diverse ways. JABIR BIN HAYAN: Introduced experimental research in chemical science which immensely added its rapid development and made him the Father of Chemistry. He devised methods for preparation of important chemicals like hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and white lead. 3 Jabir's work also deal with the refinement of metals ,preparation of steel, dyeing of cloth and leather, use of magnese dioxide in glass making, distillation of vinegar to concentrate acetic acid.Jabir also explained scientifically two principle functions of chemistry, i. e. , calcination, and reduction and registered a marked improvement in the methods of evaporation, sublimation, distillation and crystallization He wrote more than 100 books which are one of the most outstanding contributions in the field of science especially the chemical science. ABDUL HASSAN IBN AL HAITHAM: One of the most outstanding Mathematicians, Physiologists, and Opticians of Islam. He contributed to the realms of medicine and philosophy. He wrote more than 200 scientific works on diverse subjects.Haitham examined the refraction of light rays through transparent objects including air and water. Infact he was the first scientist to elaborate two laws of reflection of light He made a number of monumental discoveries in the field of optics ,including one which locates retina as the seat of vision. His book on optics â€Å"Kitab Al Manazir† vividly shows his grip on the subject. He constructed a pinhole camera and studied formation of images . Due to his noteworthy contributions he is regarded as one of the prolific Muslim scientists of all times.OMAR AL KHAYAM: He was an outstanding Mathematician and Astronomer. He was also known as a poet, philosopher and a physician. He travelled to the great centers of learning of the era i. e. Samrakund, Bukhara, and Ispahan. He classified many algebraic equations based on their complexity and recognized thirteen different forms of cubic equation. He also classified algebraic theories of parallel lines. On the invitation of Sultan Jalal-ud- Din, he introduced the Jilali calendar which has an error of one day in 3770 years. He also developed accurate methods for determination of gravity as a poet too, he is known for his Rubaiyat. He made great contributions in the development of mathematics and analytical geometry which benefitted Europe several years later. NASIR UD DIN TUSI: Al tusi was one of the greatest scientists, Mathematicians, Astronomers, Philosophers, Theologians and physicians of his time. He was a prolific writer and wrote many treatises on varied subjects like Algebra, Arithmetic, Trignometry, Geometery, Logic, Met aphy sics, medicine, ethics and Theology. He served as a minister of Halaku Khan and persuaded him to establish an observatory and library after the destruction of Baghdad. He worked at the observatory and prepared precise tables regarding the motion of the planets. These are also known as â€Å"Tables of Khan† ZIA UD DIN IBN BAITAR: Was a famous botanist and pharmacopeias of middle ages. Because of his intensive travels, he was able to discover many plant species. He wrote many books regarding his field of specialty and is always considered as a prominent scientist among his Muslim counterparts 3.IMPACT OF SCIENCE ON SOCIETY Science is the organization of knowledge in such a way that it commands the hidden potential in nature. This hidden potential is surfaced out by the subject of science through the process of understanding. Science has proved to be of enormous beneficial nature . It h as made lasting impact on regarding each and every field of human existence. Whether it is concerned with our day to day lives or whether it is related with the various modern developments which have resulted in elevating the living standards of the individuals. The significant contributions which the study of this subject has made are enumerated below. SCIENCE AND HUMAN ATTITUDE: The various noteworthy scientific advances have helped the individuals in raising up of their self confidence . This subject has enabled the human beings to control and modify their needs and requriements. With greater understanding of the scientific phenomena human beings have now become more confident about the environmental issues as compared to the people in the past. Infact science has promoted and paved the way for the independent and logical thinking.SCIENCE AND HUMAN HEALTH: Before the development of modern medicinal factors, a large number of people used to lose their precious lives because of the unavailability of the sources and medicines for a proper health care. With the advancements of science now the human life expectancy rate has increased as the various modern developments in the field of health care has helped in warding off the dangerous diseases†¦ The revolutions in surgery and medicine the infectious diseases like small pox, malaria, typhoid etc. have been eradicated. Thus science has improved the health standards of the people. SCIENCE AND TRAVEL: People used to travel on foot before the inventions of automobiles, aeroplanes and steam engines. They also used animal carts and camels for the purpose of moving from one place to another. However, the modern scientific inventions have proved to be of great significance as it has added speed to the area of travel. The quick means of transportation have decreased the distances and are a source of saving time. In fact it would not be wrong to regard that these inventions have added much peace to the lives of the mode rn men.SCIENCE AND COMMUNICATION: Science has also played a significant part in the development of the modern communication technology. Earlier people were living in isolation because of the slow means of communication. Now the well developed, efficient media have made it possible to communicate with each other more rapidly and quickly. The impact of mass media is enormous. The use of computers and televisions has made the world a global village where an event in one part of the world leaves an influence on the other.DEMERITS OF SCIENCE: Every invention of science has got its own merits and demerits. The most serious invention that science has contributed to is the development of the weapons of mass destruction like the atom and nuclear bombs. The recent wars have greatly showed that how much destruction can be brought about with the use of these lethal weapons. In fact these modern inventions of science have resulted in the elevation of the anxiety and unrest in the modern societie s. Another notable demerit which the study of this subject has lead to the rise in the environmental deterioration.Day by day the pollution factor is increasing which has proved to be very toxic and harmful for the human health. Not only the human health it is also proving fatal for the animals as well as the existing plants. The rapid developments of science and industrialization have also divided the world. The developed and the undeveloped. This division has lead to a widening gap between the status and the living standards of people. There is economic disparity which has also given rise to class distinction 4. UNIVERSEThe BIG BANG THEORY about the universe is the most widely acceptable theories with regard to the origin of the universe. According to the big bang, the universe was created sometime between 10 billion and 20 billion years ago from a cosmic explosion that hurled matter and in all directions. All the galaxies were formed from this matter. Observations of these galaxi es show that they are still moving apart from each other . The universe is expanding Some scientists have suggested another theory as â€Å"steady theory:† to explain the process of the evolution of the universe. However the general notion on which all scientists agree is the theory of Big Bang. Steady theory is the theory about the universe and the observations by the astronomers have shown that the galaxies are moving away from each other and the universe seems to be expanding. The theory shows that the new matter is always being created to fill the space left by this expansion. The new matter moves apart and forms galaxies which continue to move apart. This means that the universe always look exactly the same. It has no beginning or end but in a steady state. However many observations have suggested that the universe has not always looked like the same. THE FUTURE OF UNIVERSE: At present the universe is expanding but the astronomers have questioned that whether or not this e xpansion will continue . Certain observations which have been made in this regard is that one possible ending of the universe will be the â€Å"big crunch?. The galaxies and other matter may be moving apart but their motion is restrained by their mutual gravitational attraction. If there is a sufficient matter in the universe gravity will eventually win and egin pulling the galaxies together again causing the universe to experience a reverse of the big bang i. e. , the BIG CRUNCH. However there is a possibility that there is not enough matter in the universe for the big crunch to happen. This means that if it happens then the universe will continue to expand forever. 5. GALAXY Galaxy is a huge number of stars grouped together. The term galaxy can also be described as a collection of dust, gas and stars measuring thousands of parsecs across. Galzxy contains 10000million stars and looks like a disc with a fat centre and spiral arms. From the front it looks like a convex lens‘s C lasses of galaxy: Two broad classes of galaxy are there. 1. Elliptical 2. Spiral the spiral galaxies are further sub divided into normal which constitutes of majority of spirals and barred spirals. Barred spirals have their centre in the form of the bar. The elliptical galaxies range from E 0 to E 7 from an almost spherical shape to a flattened disc. 5 Milky Way: Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy about 30,000 parsecs across. There are more than 200 billion stars in the galaxy. Its disc appears as a faint white band that is responsible for dividing the white sky at the night into two. The name of our galaxy is Milky Way. The galaxy has three spiral arms called the Orion, Perseus, and Sagittarius arms and the whole system is rotating in space. The sun revolves around the nucleus of the galaxy once in 225 million years. This duration is also called the cosmic year. I -INTRODUCTION: Milky Way, the large, disk-shaped aggregation of stars, or galaxy, that includes the Sun and its solar system. In addition to the Sun, the Milky Way contains about 400 billion other stars. There are hundreds of billions of other galaxies in the universe, some of which are much larger and contain many more stars than the Milky Way. The Milky Way is visible at night, appearing as a faintly luminous band that stretches across the sky. The name Milky Way is derived from Greek mythology, in which the band of light was said to be milk from the breast of the goddess Hera. Its hazy appearance results from the combined light of stars too far away to be distinguished individually by the unaided eye. All of the individual stars that are distinct in the sky lie within the Milky Way Galaxy. From the middle northern latitudes, the Milky Way is best seen on clear, moonless, summer nights, when it appears as a luminous, irregular band circling the sky from the northeastern to the southeastern horizon. It extends through the constellations Peruses, Cassiopeia, and Cepheus. In the region of the Northern Cross it divides into two streams: the western stream, which is bright as it passes through the Northern Cross, fades near Ophiuchus, or the Serpent Bearer, because of dense dust clouds, and appears again in Scorpio; and the eastern stream, which grows brighter as it passes southward through Sputum and Sagittarius. The brightest part of the Milky Way extends from Sputum to Scorpio, through Sagittarius. The center of the galaxy lies in the direction of Sagittarius and is about 25,000 light-years from the Sun (a light-year is the distance light travels in a year, about 9. 46 trillion km or 5. 88 trillion mi). II -STRUCTURE: Galaxies have three common shapes: elliptical, spiral, and irregular. Elliptical galaxies have an ovoid or globular shape and generally contain older stars. Spiral galaxies are disk-shaped with arms that curve around their edges, making these galaxies look like whirlpools.Spiral galaxies contain both old and young stars as well as numerous clouds of dust and gas from whic h new stars are born. Irregular galaxies have no regular structure. Astronomers believe that their structures were distorted by collisions with other galaxies. Astronomers classify the Milky Way as a large spiral or possibly a barred spiral galaxy, with several spiral arms coiling around a central bulge about 10,000 light-years thick. Stars in the central bulge are close together, while those in the arms are farther apart. The arms also contain clouds of interstellar dust and gas.The disk is about 100,000 light-years in diameter and is surrounded by a larger cloud of hydrogen gas. Surrounding this cloud in turn is a spherical halo that contains many separate globular clusters of stars mainly lying above or below the disk. This halo may be more than twice as wide as the disk itself. In addition, studies of galactic movements suggest that the Milky Way system contains far more matter than is accounted for by the visible disk and attendant clusters—up to 2,000 billion times more mass than the Sun contains.Astronomers have therefore speculated that the known Milky Way system is in turn surrounded by a much larger ring or halo of undetected matter known as dark matter. III -TYPES OF STARS: The Milky Way contains both the so-called type I stars, brilliant, blue stars; and type II stars, giant red stars. Blue stars tend to be younger because they burn furiously and use up all of their fuel within a few tens of millions of years. Red stars are usually older, and use their fuel at a slower rate that they can sustain for tens of billions of years. The central Milky Way and the halo are largely composed of the type II population. Most of this region is obscured behind dust clouds, which prevent visual observation. Astronomers have been able to detect light from this region at other wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum, however, using radio and infrared telescopes and satellites that detect X rays (see Radio Astronomy; Infrared Astronomy; X-Ray Astronomy). Su ch studies indicate compact objects near the galactic center, probably a massive black hole. A black hole is an object so dense that nothing, not even light, can escape its intense gravity. The center of the galaxy is home to clouds of antimatter particles, which reveal themselves by emitting gamma rays when they meet particles of matter and annihilate. Astronomers believe the antimatter particles provide more evidence for a massive black hole at the Milky Way‘s center. Observations of stars racing around the center also suggest the presence of a black hole. The stars orbit at speeds up to 1. 8 million km/h (1. 1 million mph)—17 times the speed at which Earth circles the Sun—even though they are hundreds of times farther from the center than Earth is from the Sun.The greater an object‘s mass, the faster an object orbiting it at a given distance will move. Whatever lies at the center of the galaxy must have a tremendous amount of mass packed into a relatively small area in order to cause these stars to orbit so quickly at such a distance. The most likely candidate is a black hole. Surrounding the central region is a fairly flat disk comprising stars of both type II and type I; the brightest members of the latter category are luminous, blue supergiant.Imbedded in the disk, and emerging from opposite sides of the central region, are the spiral arms, which contain a majority of the type I population together with much interstellar dust and gas. One arm passes in the vicinity of the Sun and includes the great nebula in Orion. See Nebula. 6 IV -ROTATION: The Milky Way rotates around an axis joining the galactic poles. Viewed from the north galactic pole, the rotation of the Milky Way is clockwise, and the spiral arms trail in the same direction. The period of rotation decreases with the distance from the center of the galactic system. In the neighborhood of the solar system the period of rotation is more than 200 million years. The speed of t he solar system due to the galactic rotation is about 220 km/sec (about 140 mi/sec). 6. SOLAR SYSTEM The solar system includes nine planets and sun being at the centre. All the planets revolve around the sun . The solar system also includes the asteroids, meteors and numerous comets. All of these travel around the sun in a particular orbit .
